3DSL Overview
3DSL is Streamsim's streamline-based reservoir simulator which offers a powerful solution to rapidly gain insight into how geology, fluid properties, and wells interact to affect recovery. 3DSL can be run from the command line or through Streamsim's powerful user interface, studioSL. Unlike more traditional simulation approaches, streamlines allow to visualize and quantify the flow between injector/producers pairs, delineate drainage regions of each well, and offer unparalleled speed to investigate multiple production scenarios.
Request a demo license to test a fully functional version of 3DSL and studioSL. You will need to register before you can download our software. See our brochure for more information.

3DSL is continuously being improved both in terms of usability, compatibility, and functionality. Here are some ongoing developments that will enhance the next versions of 3DSL. Some of these are already being tested. If you are interested in being a beta-tester, please contact us.
- Polymer flood functionality. 3DSL v4.0 will have the ability to model polymers dissolved in the water phase. The physics of flow will include the usual effects of increasing water viscosity with increasing polymer concentration, shear-thinning effects, reversible adsorption, dependence on salt concentration, and permeability reduction. This work has been generously support by OMV. See our SPE paper for more information:
- Thiele, M.R., Batycky, R.P., Poellitzer, S., and Clemens, T.:"Polymer Flood Modeling Using Streamlines," SPE 115545 presented at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 21-24 September 2008, Denver, Colorado, USA.
- Shared memory parallelization. Streamline simulation is an obvious candidate for parallelization. 3DSL v4.0 will run in parallel mode on shared memory machines. The parallel option is an add-on license and needs to be purchased separately. This work has been a collaboration between Streamsim and Fraunhofer SCAI. For more information on the parallel version of 3DSL see our SPE paper:
- Batycky, R.P., Foerster, M., Thiele, M.R., and Stueben, K.: "Parallelization of a Commercial Streamline Simulator and Performance on Practical Models," SPE 118684 presented at the SPE Reservoir Simulation Symposium, Houston, TX, 2-4 February 2009.
- External import of velocity field. If one already has a model that has been history matched with a traditional FD simulator and the immediate interest is only to explore the connectivity of the reservoir via the streamlines and the Flux Pattern Map, 3DSL v4.0 will allow the import of an external velocity field (plus supporting data). For now, data is expected to come in in Eclipse-format. This work has been generously supported by ConocoPhillips.
- Functionality.Additional functionality in 3DSL v4.0 will include:
- Support for depth varying bubble point or Rs for initialization.
- Improved support for historical well data.
- Support for historical BHP data.
